Battle is a Stage Combat /Hip Hop driven performance piece about fighting the agents of Despair, Censorship, Division, and Oppression. Our collective struggle is a visual revolt song, a waltzing love letter to all who fight for their right to be safe in their skin. A fighter’s breath, a fighter’s trek is a Declaration of War to all Oppressors. United we cry, laugh, love and fight. United we prepare for Battle.
“Battle” is directed by Jeffery Da’Shade Johnson, who recently played the role of Mason S. Dixon in “Underground,” a play by Dr. Lisa B. Thompson. Jeffery Da’Shade Johnson is also a 2017 B. Iden Payne awards nominee, and was the head organizer for the 2016 HipHop4Flint ATX fundraiser at Salvage Vanguard Theatre. Johnson is also a founding member of the Austin based fight choreography group Cry Havoc Action Choreography.
On Friday, June 2nd, Anuradha Naimpally, Soumya Ashok, and Purna Bajekal will perform as guest artists, presenting two pieces on the power of the feminine warrior.
